Biography Kendy Hau

BIO: Kendy Hau, Director NatSec, Defence & Intel. Services Management ACT, Oracle ACS

Kendy Hau joined Oracle in November 2021. She leads Oracle’s Service Delivery for the ACT Region and the Defence, NATSEC and Intel Services portfolio.

Prior to joining Oracle, Kendy served as the Senior Departmental Liaison Officer to the Minister for Defence in 2021 and was the Director Joint Influence Activities, Information Warfare Division from March 2018 to May 2021.

In her role as Director JIA Kendy had the responsibility for the development of concepts and strategies that articulated how the ADF characterises Information Warfare (IW) and effectively contests in the Grey zone. She led the work on IW operating concepts, policy, experimentation, emerging and persuasive technology and the capability management of Joint Influence Activities and Information Operations.

Prior to these leadership positions, Kendy was a Defence Scientist for over 10 years and led the Human & Cultural Analysis Team (HCAT) at the Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) where she was part of the Support to Ops S&T High Readiness Fly Away Team. In 2012, as part of the CDF directed Cultural Compatibility Study (CCS), Kendy led three field studies to Afghanistan. The studies examined the cultural, social/interpersonal and operational friction points between the ADF and their ANSF counterparts that may jeopardise the Train, Advise, Assist mission, and increase the Insider Threat Risk.

She is the lead author of the CCS report series (Honour, Respect, Trust & Friendship: A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship between Afghan and Australian Forces), the ADF Mentor Training Framework, and contributed to the ISAF Insider Threat Handbook and Cultural Handbook.

Kendy has authored over 30 scientific publications and book chapters during her time at DSTG. In 2013, she was awarded a Gold Commendation by Chief Joint Operations Command for her work on the CCS. In 2014 she was recognised as part of the analytical team that contributed towards the apprehension of SGT Hekmatullah, responsible for the insider attack on ADF soldiers in 2012.

Kendy has extensive experience supporting operational commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan in influence strategies and information operations concepts. Prior to a career in the public service, Kendy worked in marketing psychology for Qantas and was part of the organisations marketing and human factors team.

She has a background in Psychology, Behavioural Sciences, Marketing, and Conflict Theory. Kendy is currently undertaking a PhD with the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Her thesis topic explores the concept of collective emotion as a structural antecedent to conflict, and narrative of disinformation. She is also trying to organise her wedding in Umbria, Italy in June 2023. Fingers crossed.
